In the author’s words:
As an author of lesbian fiction and romance sometimes I’m asked what inspired me to write. It’s not an easy question to answer. All my life I’ve enjoyed reading. As a child I wrote a few short stories but stopped. It wasn’t until I was 50 that I started again. My best friend and I were lounging on the beach when I mentioned to her a story idea I had played with in my mind for decades. She told me to write it…so I did. It sounded simple and in some ways it was. Many of the characters already lived in my head. I knew them well. What I didn’t know, though, were their life stories. They were like strangers stepping out of the fog, first one, then another and then another. Each had a story to tell, and I was the only one that could listen…so I did. For those that don’t know me I tend to write paranormal/spirit world fiction but have strayed into other genres. I have to admit that writing isn’t fun, but it is rewarding. It’s hard work, quite tedious and exhausting. It’s an attempt to paint a picture with words. If the reader can’t visualize what they are reading, if they can’t feel the emotions, see the characters, experience the events then I have failed. My first published book, The Illusionist, was meant to be a stand-a-lone. Six books later, the series was completed…or was it? The characters are still very much alive. The rewards from writing come when readers contact me or my publisher to comment on how much they enjoyed the books.
Also, as a writer of lesbian fiction I am extremely proud of the Alice B Medals award I received in 2011. It was such an honor because it’s given anonymously “to living writers who have careers distinguished by consistently well-written works about lesbians”. Thank you to those who made this award possible and thank you to everyone who continues to support our authors, publishers, copyeditors, cover artists, proof and beta readers. It takes a village.
