Chapter 1

Prologue

Nadine was relaxing in her den, swirling a deep Burgundy in its delicate glass, when her phone interrupted the peace of her evening. Placing the glass on the table in front of her, she pressed the button to answer the call.

“Yes.” Her quiet voice echoed in the absolute silence of her private refuge.

“I see,” she responded, after listening to the person on the other end. Although there was a subtle fury hovering around the edges of her voice, few would detect her emotions. She’d mastered the ability to hide everything. Maggie was the only person who was able to weed through the subtle changes in her voice.

“No, I will take care of this. Don’t involve yourself lest they discover your identity. So far, you’ve been able to operate under the radar. I’d like to keep it that way. If The Organization sniffs into your background, they’ll connect you to your father. That is if they haven’t already. Stay away from Candy. That’s an order.”

Nadine’s face flushed with anger at the response from the other end. She’d coated her lightning-fast response with a dangerous edge. Poison on the end of a lethal knife. “I will not repeat that order. I deal with impertinent operatives swiftly and permanently. You, of all people, should know this. I don’t consider love, or lust, a reason to disobey me.”

After Nadine ended the call, she set the phone down on her marble table and in a rare demonstration of emotion, picked up her wineglass and hurled it at the fireplace. The cliché of her reaction only increased her anger. She’d constructed things to take care of both of the thorns in her side. Like a jack-in-the-box, The Organization had popped up. Unscathed. They hadn’t lost one damn agent. Certainly, no chaos as she’d hoped, which would give her time to plan.

“God damn it. If you want something done right,” she cried out to the empty room.

A calmness overtook her as she settled back onto her couch and reconsidered her options. Perhaps she’d been too hasty to steer agent Sara away from her old girlfriend, Candy. With Maggie, former head of The Organization, out of commission, the new head, Char, would be in charge and for whatever reason, she had a soft spot for Candy. The nail in the coffin would be Candy’s girlfriend, Dani. She would feel a need to save the deceitful woman and Char would have an insane desire to protect her younger sister, Dani, no matter the cost.

Picking up the phone again, she punched in the number to an old friend, one whose bitterness rivaled her own. “Katrina, it’s Nadine. I need your expertise. I’ll pay double for your latest technology. Our friends are continuing to be a burr on my ass. They’ve been busy. I must admit I’ve underestimated them and their clever technology.”

Feeling restless, Nadine stood and paced the wooden floor. “Oh no, no, I’m not suggesting anyone is better than you. I am simply acknowledging Maggie has some new talent that might make your days less boring and add to your growing retirement fund. I wish you would reconsider my previous offer. Settling down with one employer might serve both our interests. We work so well together.”

Nadine smiled. “Well, it was worth a try. I’ll meet you at our usual place around six? Wonderful.”

Her former employers had made a grave mistake when they’d stopped keeping tabs on Katrina. Their first blunder was underestimating her brilliance. The second was letting her go free to sell her talents to the highest bidder. Nadine had to admit that Maggie, then head of The Organization, tried to warn them. But they hadn’t listened. Katrina was the best tech expert she’d ever known, certainly rivaling the new talent at The Organization. Nadine respected Katrina, but she’d never trust her. Katrina had no loyalties to anyone but herself.
