Chapter 1

Prologue

Hello, readers. I want to relate a tale that I stumbled across on one of my walks in the Lake District. They say you can have the strangest conversations and experiences in the most unusual places. Very true in my case.

I met a fellow traveler, an older American woman, I bumped into on a rainy day on a late autumn afternoon. It was in the middle of muddy fields and no sign of buildings for miles ahead. We found refuge in a cave opening barely big enough to fit us both in. Swapping the odd story of our journeys over the years was a pleasant enough pastime as we waited for the rain to cease. The view was stunning, if a little hazy because of the rain. The odd thing was there appeared to be more than one rainbow, like a kaleidoscope. As I tried to focus on the apex of the rainbows it took me to a spot in a green valley between two mountains and a lake. I had never seen that before and I’d walked this area for over twenty years. The woman beside me gasped.

“At last.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Oh, you will not see this again in your lifetime.” She smiled at me. “Well maybe when you are as old as me.”

“You’ve seen it before?”

“Once, thirty years ago. I hope I’m allowed to return.” The last few words she whispered I listened intently to hear them.

Perplexed I stroked my chin. “I don’t understand. Is it private property?”

“I guess in a way it is. Thirty years ago, I experienced an event that I’m desperately trying to regain.”

I huddled into my wet raingear and frowned. “Want to share?”

She gave me a concerned look. Then smiled. “Why not? It might be the only time I ever tell anyone of my full experience.”

“You’ve never told anyone before?”

“Not really. I figured no one would believe my story. There are moments when even I don’t, though only for a moment”

I was intrigued big time. “Maybe I will be the one who does.”

She gave me a wide smile. “Then I shall tell you and you can make what you want of the information.”
